Chasin’ Turkeys & Catchin’ Trout

Posted by Ryan Fifield | Posted in Fishing Reports, Hunting Reports | Posted on 14-05-2018

Evan joined us for a Blast & Cast trip. Saturday morning we had three birds gobbling, but for some reason they hung up at about 150 yards away. The hens were around us for hours. We had a hoot in the afternoon floating down the river. I brought my mouth turkey call and put that into action, as we greeted fellow anglers with hen yelps and soft purrs.  The rain didn’t stop the fish from biting, as we landed three nice browns, lost one rainbow, and a couple of other fish. A bunch of trout chased us back to the boat, too. Notice the bald eagle checking out Evan’s catch in the third photo.    Evan is a very established sportsman, who has traveled the world on hunting adventures. He’s targeted almost every big and small game animal on the planet and has been extremely successful on these hunts. However, he told me that there’s something about turkey hunting that gets him all fired up. He’ll be back with us to get his NY bird. We’re looking forward to his return!    #BlastAndCast #CatchPhotoRelease #BuckHornLodge #FifieldOutfitters

Good Times with Bruce & Keith

Posted by Ryan Fifield | Posted in Fishing Reports | Posted on 09-05-2018

We had the pleasure of having Bruce from Virginia and Keith from Pennsylvania, join us for four nights at the Buck-Horn Lodge & Cabins. On Saturday, they drifted the East Branch with us. Each one caught and released a beautiful and healthy looking trout! Bruce landed his on a fly rod and Keith wrangled his in on a spinning rod. These guys have traveled the United States in search of the best trout waters that our nation has to offer. They said that the location of the Buck-Horn Lodge is the ultimate trout angler’s dream, because we’re located on and are within short traveling distances from the top trout fisheries.

Gilles & Hubert Take on Blast & Cast Package

Posted by Ryan Fifield | Posted in Fishing Reports, Hunting Reports | Posted on 02-05-2018

Father and son, Gilles and Hubert, traveled all the way from Canada to the western Catskills for an outdoors excursion with Fifield Outfitters. This adventurous pair took on our Blast & Cast Package today and will do it again tomorrow. They’re turkey hunting in the mornings and drift boat spin cast fishing in the afternoons. What a beautiful day it was in Delaware County, NY for them! Gilles topped it off by landing a nice brown trout on the mighty East Branch!

PIT Handheld Scanner

Posted by Ryan Fifield | Posted in Fifield News | Posted on 01-05-2018

Thank you to NYS licensed guide, Mr. Ben Rinker, of East Branch Outfitters, for asking us to help with the NYS DEC 3 year fish tagging study on the Upper Delaware River watershed. We will be using a PIT (passive integrated transponder) tag handheld scanner. When trout are landed on our drift boat, they will be scanned to see if they carry a tag and what number tag it is. With our cell phone, we’ll record the tag numbers and locations using an app. On www.dec.ny.gov/docs/fish_marine_pdf/dfip.pdf, it states that this information “assess trout movements, habitat usage, and connectivity between main stem and tributary habitats.”  #TroutStudy #ActionResearch #PITTag #PITTagScanner #BrownTrout #RainbowTrout #UpperDelawareRiver

Guy’s Biggest Brown to Date

Posted by Ryan Fifield | Posted in Fishing Reports | Posted on 24-04-2018

Guy got a hold of us to book a trip to learn how to streamer fish. It’s safe to say, he’s a quick learner, as we helped him land the biggest brown he’s caught on a fly rod AND his first using a streamer! What a gorgeous day out, we even saw a golden eagle that looked like a 747 flying down the East Branch.

Fly Fishing Presentation for 4-H Club

Posted by Ryan Fifield | Posted in Fifield News | Posted on 22-04-2018

On this beautiful Earth Day, we had the privilege of teaching the awesome Team Clover 4-H Club, a bit of how to be Jr. fly fishing anglers and connected that with environmental stewardship. We stressed to them to carry out more then they carry in. They learned about our drift boat and how it works and they all got to climb in and either be a guide or a client. We went over to the learning table that we set up to check out the bug life on the Upper Delaware River. We had photos of the real bugs and tied flies of them for the students to compare. They appeared intrigued by the variety of flies. We gave them a hatch chart so when they’re down by the river, they’ll have an idea of what hatches will be on the water throughout the season. We also gave each member a copy of the book, “The Orvis Kids’ Guide To Beginning Fly Fishing” by, Tyler Befus, along with a graham cracker bug snack. All the kids were naturals when it came to casting a fly rod. The future of our sport is looking very promising with children like these on the water! Thanks so much Mrs. Bull for inviting us, we had a blast! #4HJrAnglers #EarthDay2018 #FifieldOutfitters

Main Stem Fly Fishing

Posted by Ryan Fifield | Posted in Fishing Reports | Posted on 15-04-2018

Fifield Outfitters’ clients, father and son, Al and Al, returned for another float trip. We hit up the Main Stem of the Delaware River on a warm and sunny day. On the fly rods, we managed to hook up four times, but to no avail, as nothing was put in the net. We were able to see two of the four fish that we hooked up to, and they were big browns. When we were loading the boat up, I talked with five other drift boats and they didn’t have any hook ups. These guys enjoy spending family time on the water and are looking at a return trip later in the season for redemption on these big ol’ hook jaws.    #FatherAndSonFlyFishingTrip #MainStemDelawareRiver #FlyFishingGuide

Cousins’ Ice Fishing Trip

Posted by Ryan Fifield | Posted in Fishing Reports | Posted on 22-02-2018

We had the pleasure of  guiding Tom, Martin, and Joe on a two day ice fishing adventure. Day one, we hit up White Lake and the fishing was very slow. With the barometer at 30.10, it was going to be a challenge to get the fish to cooperate. We had flags here and there, but the fish were only grabbing the tails of our bait and then letting go. The shore lunch for this day featured marinated venison steaks and cutlets along with other snacks. Day two, the barometer sank to 29.33, which hopefully would make the fish more active. We set up on Lake Superior and when we began putting the tip-ups in, one immediately went off to which Joe brought up a pickerel through the hard water hole. Martin caught a pickerel as well on a tip-up. Tom got jiggy with it and jigged up a nice pickerel, too! The wildgame shore lunch special of the day was venison and bear bacon cheeseburgers and freshly caught walleye and perch. We had so much in common with these guys, between the jokes and stories, there was no short of laughter. We look forward to our next adventure with them!

Birthday Pike

Posted by Ryan Fifield | Posted in Fishing Reports | Posted on 11-02-2018

Noah and Amber contacted us to take them on their first ever ice fishing adventure to celebrate Amber’s birthday. They hoped to land a northern pike. Despite the harsh weather conditions on Lake Champlain, we were able to make their wish come true!   A monster toothy critter was brought up the hole by the birthday girl! Way to go Amber and Happy Birthday! We look forward to taking this awesome couple on more fishing expeditions!    #HappyBirthdayAmber #NorthernPike #LakeChamplain #CatchPhotoRelease
