Our Fifield Outfitters’ ice team took home two of the top honors in another Smileys Bait Shop 3 day fishing derby! 🙂 Ryan Fifield won in the perch division and Roy Fifield in the pike category for March’s end of the season competition. Congratulations to all the ice fishing anglers who participated! 🎣 A special thanks to Peter Tucker for all the time, effort, and dedication that he puts into organizing these fun, outdoor, family oriented, events! 😀 We’re looking forward to next season’s ice fishing tournaments!

It’s with extremely heavy hearts, that yet again, we express our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of another dear friend and client, Jimmy, who tragically passed away. Jimmy had a passion for fishing and hunting and excelled in these areas. I was awestruck by his fly fishing skills, to be so talented at his young age, made me thoroughly impressed. He out foxed tons of fish, including the trout pictured below that he caught and released.The big game weren’t safe when he was around. This past hunting season, Jimmy harvested a beautiful black bear at the Buck-Horn Lodge and in the 2016 hunting season here, he harvested a great 8 pointer. Jimmy got my sense of humor and he had one of the best of his own. He was kind, adventurous, and had a zest for life. I always looked forward to him stopping by with his buddy, Jake, when they were in town to catch up. I’m really going to miss that. On behalf of Ron, Carolyn, Scott, Meghan, Will, Greg, and Alicia, I send heartfelt condolences to Jim Sr. and the rest of Jimmy’s loved ones. I love you brother.

We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of long time Buck-Horn Lodge customer and friend, Mel Sherman. This past November marked Mel’s 50th hunting season at the lodge and this photo was taken with my mother-in-law, Carolyn, marking this anniversary. He was an avid hunter who harvested numerous big game throughout the years on the property. Family and friends came with him over the years and he made friends with others that frequented the lodge, too. Mel enjoyed Iris’s homemade soups, applesauce, entrees, and pies. He was just reminiscing about them with Carolyn and Alicia this past season. Back in the day, Alicia took pride in making special requested peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for him, which were enclosed in brown bags that she decorated specially for him. Mel is now posting up by a tree in God’s country. On behalf of Ron & Carolyn Lewis, Scott, Meghan, & Will Lewis, and Alicia and me, we send our deepest sympathy to his family. He will be greatly missed. 
Thank you to NYS licensed guide, Mr. Ben Rinker, of East Branch Outfitters, for asking us to help with the NYS DEC 3 year fish tagging study on the Upper Delaware River watershed. We will be using a PIT (passive integrated transponder) tag handheld scanner. When trout are landed on our drift boat, they will be scanned to see if they carry a tag and what number tag it is. With our cell phone, we’ll record the tag numbers and locations using an app. On www.dec.ny.gov/docs/fish_marine_pdf/dfip.pdf, it states that this information “assess trout movements, habitat usage, and connectivity between main stem and tributary habitats.”

On this beautiful Earth Day, we had the privilege of teaching the awesome Team Clover 4-H Club, a bit of how to be Jr. fly fishing anglers and connected that with environmental stewardship. We stressed to them to carry out more then they carry in. They learned about our drift boat and how it works and they all got to climb in and either be a guide or a client. We went over to the learning table that we set up to check out the bug life on the Upper Delaware River. We had photos of the real bugs and tied flies of them for the students to compare. They appeared intrigued by the variety of flies. We gave them a hatch chart so when they’re down by the river, they’ll have an idea of what hatches will be on the water throughout the season. We also gave each member a copy of the book, “The Orvis Kids’ Guide To Beginning Fly Fishing” by, Tyler Befus, along with a graham cracker bug snack. All the kids were naturals when it came to casting a fly rod. The future of our sport is looking very promising with children like these on the water!
